Iowa City, IA, January 02, 2007 --(PR.COM)-- The National Learning and Achievement Organization represented scholarship foundations at a hearing on December 18, 2006 in Chicago, Illinois. The hearing was a result of Congressman David Wu's (OR) continued efforts to bring U.S. college textbook pricing into line. The Advisory Committee on Student Financial Assistance held the hearing at the University of Illinois -- Chicago. Tammie Cumming, Executive Director of the National Learning and Achievement Organization, attended the hearing as an invited participant. Scholarship foundations are very concerned about the rising textbook costs. "College students often pay double what overseas students pay for identical textbooks," said Congressman David Wu. "The pricing practices of the college textbook industry defied common sense and that is why I have asked the GAO to investigate.""The general public and scholarship foundations have a vested interest in ensuring the textbook industry pricing methods are fair and competitive," said Cumming. It would be unfortunate if textbook publishers increased their prices, with the knowledge that the increased prices are simply factor into the financial aid formula without much scrutiny.Dr....

PASADENA, California (Reuters) -- Sarah studies observational cosmology, Glenn experiments with fluid dynamics and Marlena is making a computer tablet. But these students at the California Institute of Technology, one of the most challenging universities in the world, struggle with a recipe for corn pudding. Such is the irony of "Cooking Basics" -- one of the most popular classes at Caltech, in which the final exam-meal is judged by a Nobel laureate, one of the six on the faculty and 30 in the history of the university, located in the Los Angeles suburb of Pasadena. "We have amazingly gifted people in science and engineering and they are viewed by many people as nerdy," said Caltech's French-born president, Jean-Lou Chameau. "But at the same time, they are still young people, they want to learn about life, they want to do different things," Chameau said as he observed 20 students tackling this week's lesson -- Southern U.S....

Still, they insist, "I'm listening!" Parents have never had an easy time relating to their teens, and now there's more to compete with than ever. According to the Pew Internet and American Life Project, 87 percent of 12- to 17-year-olds are regularly online, 75 percent use instant messaging, and 84 percent own cell phones and iPods. ....

Jake Todd looked at the Spanish language book and shook his head. "I pay about $400 each semester for my books," said Todd, an education and political science major at the University of Nevada, Reno. "You can't get around it. You have to buy books, but the cost is ridiculous," said Todd, 24, of Alaska. "I end up paying a month's worth of rent and utilities for books every semester." Since 1994, the overall cost of textbooks nationally has risen at four times the rate of inflation, according to a study published in October by the Student Public Interest Groups. The report, "Required Reading: A Look at the Worst Publishing Tactics at Work," found one example of a publisher increasing the cost for the same edition of a textbook at twice the rate of inflation....

Students working as consultants for the Bad River Watershed ...

Northland College students are working as consultants for the Bad River Watershed Association (BRWA) thanks to a $75,000 grant from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation. The grant funds several student projects, including documentation of water quality at road crossings in the Bad River Watershed. Right now, students are compiling data taken from more than 500 culverts in the watershed last summer. The Bad River Watershed drains over 1,000 square miles of land along the southern shore of Lake Superior. The rivers and streams that make up the watershed are important habitat and spawning grounds for several different species of fish such as sturgeon, lake trout and salmon. However, two main issues are affecting water quality and fish populations. First, where roads cross a river or stream, culverts are installed, but many dont allow fish to easily pass through making it difficult for the fish to get to important spawning or breeding grounds....
