Calvin and Hope colleges may have one of the fiercest rivalries in all of college basketball, but that doesn't mean the two schools aren't willing to work together. All one has to do is go to www.calvinhope.com to see what I mean. Hope and Calvin officials have teamed up to create a Web site dedicated solely to the rivalry that dates back to 1920. The two teams already have met once this year, with Hope defeating Calvin 76-54 in the championship game of the Select Bank Classic on Nov. 25. However, round two is fast approaching. Calvin will host Hope at 2 p.m. on Jan. 13 in a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association game. This site is great if you can't make the game. Let's say you are living in Calgary, Alberta, or somewhere in California or Washington D.C....

TV ads are ruining pro, college sports

The toughest part of being an American sports fan late in 2006 isn't that ESPN has to sink its grubby little paws into everything. It's not that athletes are spoiled little brats who think their diapers don't stink. No, it is the over-commercialization of the games we watch and attend. Before the Eagles kick off, their offense runs through a gigantic balloon tunnel ad for erectile dysfunction medication oh, the jokes from that one. And from that point on, fans are pelted with advertisements. This trend can be summed up in four words: This is our country ... If any of you watched the World Series and judging by Fox's ratings, that means about five people in Lower Southampton and maybe a family in Warminster you were bombarded at least once an inning by screeching, aging, never-was John Mellencamp, singing about the wonders of America and, more importantly, the 2007 Chevy Silverado....
