Party time at college
Posted Tuesday, January 24, 2006 2:08:24 PM by Kate Grant

No party is complete without a theme. At least that's what we used to think until we went to college. College parties were wild, as much as we can recall... Living at a sorority house, next to a fraternity house, meant, more crazy college parties than studies.

College PartyIt's a good thing all that happened before Internet was so commonly used, otherwise some college party pics, photos and even videos were sure to make their way there.

We always tried to come up with ideas for the wildest party ever, trying to outdo the former one. We ended up spending too much, blowing our tight budget (over food and most important: beer kegs), and fighting off a bunch of drunken students at the pool party...

However, the best party ever, was the formal ball followed by a party at the end of pledge week. Sisters and pledge-sisters danced the night away, forming new bonds, to last forever.

You never stop caring for a sister, even if you haven't spoken to each other in years. Going down memory lane, these were different times.

Report: Alcohol caused college student's death
Posted Sunday, February 04, 2007 2:48:19 PM by Blog57 Team
MONROEVILLE -- A 20-year-old Alabama Southern Community College student who died in December at a party in a Monroe County field was the victim of alcohol poisoning, investigators said Friday. Tests showed the man's blood-alcohol content to be .414, Monroe County Sheriff's Department investigators said. A level of .4 is usually fatal, they said. In Alabama, motorists cannot legally drive with a level of .08 or higher. A report by the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences determined that Wesley Allan Croley of Monroeville died of acute alcohol intoxication on Dec. 9, Monroe County Chief Deputy Randall Jernigan said. At the time of Croley's death, Monroe County Sheriff Tom Tate said officers responded to a field near the Peterman community shortly after 11 p.m....

Local Patrick organizers plan regional inaugural party
Posted Tuesday, January 02, 2007 2:49:32 PM by Blog57 Team
Deval Patrick has generated so much enthusiasm that the Governor-elect is holding five regional celebrations to mark his inauguration, in addition to a ball held in Boston. The North Shore and Merrimack Valley inauguration reception will take place Jan. 5 at Merrimack College. "The Worcester event is already sold out, and the Pittsfield one is almost sold out, so people should not delay getting their tickets to the Merrimack Valley/North Shore reception," said Elizabeth Neumeier, who was the Cape Ann coordinator for Patrick's campaign. At $20 per ticket, the price is set to cover the cost of the celebration, but be affordable to local residents and families. Children and teenagers are also welcome at a reduced price. The reception is one of five regional events scheduled around the state....

Arkansas may be late, but still at the party

The team that opened the season with a 50-14 loss at home to Southern California just might end it by playing for the national title. Is it a long shot? Certainly. Is it out of the question? Not at all. The obstacle course that stands between Arkansas (9-1) and the No. 2 spot in the Bowl Championship Series standings suddenly doesn't include quite as many hurdles. "You never know," Arkansas cornerback Chris Houston said. "God's been with this team for a long time. He's brought us from 4-7 (last year) to 9-1." Arkansas zoomed all the way from 11th to seventh in the latest BCS standings after beating Tennessee 31-14 on a week when Louisville, California, Auburn and Texas all lost. A victory at Mississippi State next weekend would clinch the Southeastern Conference Western Division title and could allow the Razorbacks to leapfrog the loser of Saturday's game between No....

Give guests holiday party gifts to remember

Time to send that little black party dress to the cleaner's, because the holiday party season is almost upon us. I love this hurly-burly time of year, with all its receptions, open houses and dinner parties, because I relish the chance to spend time with dear friends I just don't see often enough.I'm always so honored when people join us at our home for a gathering during the holidays - or any time of the year - that I can't resist spoiling them with a small gift. I'm a romantic at heart, so I hope that whenever they see this little token of our friendship, they will remember our evening together with fondness. When I select a take-home remembrance for a party, I expect this small gift to play two big roles. First, it has to look smashing on my table. Not only must it fit the theme of the event, but it has to be a perfect accent to each place setting....

GOP: Who is party's future?

If the state Republican Party were a baseball team, its general manager might think of digging into the farm system to pull in some fresh faces to run for office in two years. What about the state's first female attorney general, Kelly Ayotte? Or Health and Human Services Commissioner John Stephen, who many expect to be out of a job by next October? Or Bruce Keough, who has sat on the sidelines but soon may walk back on the political field? "We have to develop a bench and have to encourage people to be candidates and figure out a way to support them when they decide to run," said Ed Dupont, a former state Senate president. Democrats last Tuesday retained the governor's office, captured both congressional seats and took over both the state House and state Senate....

College to hold race symposium after students wear blackface to party
Posted Friday, November 10, 2006 2:52:39 PM by Blog57 Team
WALLA WALLA, Wash. No classes Friday at Whitman College in Washington state. The reason: faculty and students will be attending a diversity symposium after some students wore blackface to a party. According to a college spokeswoman, students wore blackface to mimic the cast of "Survivor: Cook Islands," which divided the teams by ethnic origin at the start of the C-B-S reality show's current season. Images of the party ended up on the Internet and some students were offended. About three percent of Whitman's 14-hundred-50 students are black, while about 80 percent are white. College town approves off-campus party crackdown

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) - Tired of off-campus parties that are anything but fun for nearby homeowners, elected leaders in this college town on Monday unanimously approved new laws cracking down on nuisance party hosts and their landlords. The ordinances include tougher punishments for loud or rowdy social gatherings of 10 or more people and define 16 different nuisance activities, from drug dealing and prostitution to littering and blocking traffic.Violations can result in fines ranging from $500 to $4,000. In the case of repeated nuisance parties, the city could close the property for up to one year, the Columbia Missourian reported Tuesday.Resident Kate Akers told the Columbia City Council that during several weekends a year she wishes she lived somewhere else.“The parties that are the real problem have so many people at them that you can't count them," she said.Several University of Misosuri-Columbia students spoke against the measure, taking issue with the definition of a nuisance. The ordinances were recommended by an eight-member task force appointed by Mayor Darwin Hindman that met over the past year....

Green Party Candidate Brings Anti-Corporate Message To Campaign

When voters head into the voting booth on Nov. 7, some might be surprised to see a third choice for governor on the ballot. Nelson Eisman is the Green Party candidate. "The people of Wisconsin would be better served if they could find out that Nelson Eisman was even a candidate for governor. It's a closely held secret," Eisman said with a bemused chuckle. Eisman said that many don't know he is a legitimate candidate in the governor's race because he was excluded from the debates, which he said was the most shocking development of the campaign. He said that early in August, the League of Women Voters called and gave him some dates to set aside for the governor's debate, and he said he enthusiastically agreed to be there. But he said the League of Women Voters called back three weeks later with surprising news....

Party is over: 3 face charges
Posted Saturday, November 04, 2006 6:54:49 PM by Blog57 Team
Three people face misdemeanor alcohol charges in connection with a Sept. 23 party that led to the cancellation of two Concord High School football games, including the homecoming game. Authorities say the party was held on Cochran Road by Kyle Watson, 18. The football player apparently was hosting the party for a friend, Cody Young, who was headed to college in Florida. Watson faces charges of furnishing alcohol to minors and allowing them to drink on his premises. Young, 19, is charged with selling/furnishing alcohol to minors, and friend Terry Mead, 21, is charged with furnishing beer to minors. Warrants were issued Thursday. Court officials said the trio will need to check with the Jackson County District Court or prosecutor to arrange an arraignment date....
